The short answer
Aim for October to April. The plateau, Luxor and the Nile are warm and pleasant, and the desert evenings are cool rather than cold.
Season by season
- Winter (Dec to Feb): coolest and busiest, ideal weather, book ahead
- Spring (Mar to May): warm and lovely early on, hotter by May
- Summer (Jun to Aug): very hot in the south, start early, lower prices
- Autumn (Sep to Nov): warm and settling, a great value window
Best for the pyramids
For the Giza plateau itself, any cool month works well if you arrive at opening. A guided half day pyramids and Sphinx tour gets you there before the heat and the coach groups in any season.
Best for Luxor and the Nile
Luxor and Aswan are hotter than Cairo, so the winter months are best for cruises and temple days. If you visit in summer, sites like the Valley of the Kings are best in the early morning.
